Bad parenting: the root of all evil?

A controversial statement by Sir Michael Wilshaw, OFSTED's Chief Inspector, cites bad parenting as the root of society's problems as reported on in:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2462110/Sir-Michael-Wilshaw-attacks-hollowed-fragmented-families.html

What do you think? Is he right, are we to blame or is this another attack on parents designed to make us feel more guilty than we already do? I'd love to know your thoughts...........

    I don't think bad parenting is responsible in all cases. I think there are many factors to consider - the fact that there are lots of young bored people out of work is one. Can you imagine not having anything to do all day? No money is another one. I have seen many parents who are doing incredible jobs but for some reason or another their children have not turned out the way they expected in terms of their behaviour.

    This is not a controversial statement - it is just an overly simplistic one. I am a neuropsychiatrist by training, so I have seen my fair share of mental illness and socially-deviant behavior.
    The Chief Inspector is specifically referring to "social breakdown arising from child abuse and neglect". Is this the only reason behind social breakdown? No, there are other factors at play - there are almost always multiple factors converging to produce outcomes. However, child abuse/neglect is one very important factor along with access to nutrition, access to basic healthcare and education, limiting exposure to violence in school and the media, etc. But, if you eliminated child abuse and neglect, society would improve a great deal but other challenges would need to be addressed as well.
